Episode 277 of Anecdotally Speaking shares how one quiet moment in Tanzania forever changed the way we understand ourselves.
In this episode, Mark shares the story of Jane Goodall’s groundbreaking observation in the 1960s that shattered long-held scientific and theological beliefs.
Mark and Shawn unpack how breakthroughs like this often come from those who are unencumbered by bias, status, or entrenched systems. They explore how business leaders can learn from Goodall’s open-minded approach, and how challenging assumptions is often the key to innovation.
They also share some practical tips for spotting and capturing stories over the holiday break.
This story is perfect for use in leadership workshops, innovation sessions, or any moment where new perspectives are needed.

In 1960, 26-year-old Jane Goodall was walking through the Gombe National Park in Tanzania, where she had spent months quietly observing chimpanzees. With no formal scientific training, she brought an open mind and fresh perspective.
One morning, she saw an older male chimp pick up a blade of grass and use it to fish termites out of a mound. It was a clear act of tool use—something that, at the time, was believed to be a uniquely human trait. The reaction was swift and fierce. Scientists rejected her claims, partly because she lacked credentials, partly because her language was “unscientific” (she gave names, not numbers to the chimps), but mostly because what she had seen challenged a deeply held belief.
Her discovery rewrote the boundaries between humans and animals and opened the door to rethinking what we think we know.
