Listen to hear how Manchester United shows us that small changes can erode culture.

In Episode 275 of Anecdotally Speaking, Mark shares a story about what happened when Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down after 26 dominant years managing Manchester United. And what resulted when the next manager implemented a series of small, seemingly harmless changes.

Shawn and Mark discuss how these tiny rituals can be critical threads in an organisation’s cultural fabric, and how disrupting them without understanding can have unintended consequences.

This episode is particularly useful for leaders navigating organisational change, especially new executives stepping into established cultures.

In 2013, Sir Alex Ferguson retired after 26 years at the helm of Manchester United, having led the club to 13 Premier League titles and a slew of other trophies. His departure marked the end of an era.

David Moyes, the incoming manager, made a series of small but immediate changes. Some seemed harmless such as new drills, tweaks to diet, new meeting formats. But others disrupted long-standing rituals, like the tradition of players eating chips on Friday nights. One player, Rio Ferdinand, reflected that they didn’t desperately need the chips, but it was a ritual, and it disappeared overnight.

Individually, these changes weren’t dramatic. Collectively, they dismantled the magic. The culture that made Manchester United extraordinary began to fray. The team finished seventh the following season.
