In the 1850s, in New Jersey, a hatmaker named John began experiencing persistent coughing, which eventually turned into coughing up blood. At the time, the diagnosis was clear: consumption — now known as tuberculosis. The common remedy in that era was to head west, where the dry air and wide skies were believed to offer relief.
John set out from New Jersey but only made it about a third of the way across the country, stopping in St. Joseph, Missouri. The climate there was far from ideal, hot, humid, and muddy, yet, remarkably, John began to recover without any medication.
During his recovery, his eye as a hatmaker noticed something peculiar. The hats worn by locals in Missouri were poorly suited to the conditions. Fur traders wore brimless coon-skin caps that were infested with bugs, while others wore wide-brimmed straw hats that offered protection from the sun but failed completely in the rain, which was frequent.
John filed these observations away. When he returned to New Jersey, restored to health, he used his hatmaking expertise to design a hat that could withstand the elements of the American West. The result was a robust, practical design that would go on to become a defining symbol of frontier life.
The hat he created became known worldwide as the cowboy hat, and the man behind it was John B. Stetson.
